During Monday’s live-stream fan event, a brand-new “sneak peek” trailer for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” was shown, which you can check out below.
The film stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all—a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself—the Dragon Smaug.
The screenplay for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” was written by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro, based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The sneak peek trailer features all-new footage that revolves around Bilbo and his thirteen Dwarf companions.
Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy is nearly two months away from releasing its second act, and today we’re getting another big peek at what the series’ next film will look like. A new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been released, and it gives more of a taste of what Bilbo and his cohort of dwarves will find as they head toward the Lonely Mountain. The trailer focuses on the dwarves moving nearer to reclaiming their homeland, while giving plenty of screentime to Orlando Bloom as he reprises his role of Legolas from Lord of the Rings — this time alongside Evangeline Lilly as the elf Tauriel.
The film’s first trailer revealed one of the clearest looks yet at the Lonely Mountain’s key resident, Smaug, depicting a massive beast with glowing orange eyes. But this latest trailer gives away even more: what exactly the devastating monster sounds like. Smaug’s deep, rumbling growls only accentuate the trouble that Bilbo finds himself in at the trailer’s end. For those who missed the trilogy’s first act, there’s still plenty of time to catch up: The Desolation of Smaug won’t be hitting theaters until December 13th.
